The
RIDE IOWA Foundation is a local nonprofit organization
dedicated to improving the health of babies by
preventing birth defects and infant mortality in our
community and nationwide. We carry out our mission
through dollars donated to the local Central Iowa
Chapter of the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes
provides programs of research, education, community
services, and advocacy. The March of Dimes has a 68-year
track record of success starting with the development of
the Salk vaccine to prevent the spread of polio.
Today,
the March of Dimes is focusing its attention in five key
areas:
Prematurity – The March of
Dimes began the Prematurity Campaign in January 2003 to
find out why premature birth and low birth weight
happens and how we can stop it.
Gene Therapy – The March of
Dimes is investing $11.25 million in research over six
years in a bold attempt to cure birth defects through
gene therapy.
Folic Acid – By taking 400 mg
of Folic Acid prior to pregnancy, neural tube defects
(birth defects of the brain & spine) are reduced 50 – 70
%.
Health Care Access – The March
of Dimes is fighting to improve health care access for
pregnant women, infants and children.
The Pregnancy & Newborn Health Education
Center – This online resource can assist
in any pregnancy questions and concerns, and provide
personal help and the most accurate and up-to-date
information in both English & Spanish. A new program is
Healthy Babies, Healthy Business, an intranet site for
businesses to use that can help lower their health care
costs.
Please help us support the March of Dimes and register
today for Ride Iowa 2009.
